Apotransferrin

This is the form of transferrin which does not have iron bound to it.

Clathrin

Clathrin is the name of a protein. Clathrin proteins can either: assemble into a cage structure on the cytosolic part of the cell membrane to form clathrin coated pits. These bud off during endocytosis, giving rise to clathrin coated vesicles. form flat clathrin coats, where...

Dynamin

Dynamin is a cytoslic GTPase which catalyses the fission of vesicles. In its GTP bound state it binds to the neck of vesicles. In order for Dynamin to be able to catalyse fission, it must hyrdrolise its GTP to GDP. It is the able to bend the membrane causing vesicles to be released.

Endosome

Endsosomes are membrane bound organelles in cells where internalised material first goes to. Endosomes form a major sorting station in the endocytic pathway. From here proteins either undergo transcytosis, recycling or targetting for degradation.

—————

ESCRT

Three ESCRT proteins make up the ESCRT machinery. Initially ESCRTI is recruited to the early endosome by HRS. The ESCRT machinery is responsible for degradative protein sorting.

—————

Fission

This is the term used to describe the pinching off of vesicles.

—————

FYVE Domain

FYVE domains bind to PI3P in the early endosome. This enables the recruitment of proteins that contain a FYVE domain, for example HRS, to the early endosome.

—————

HRS

HRS is an abbreviation for Hepatocyte growth factor-regulated tyrosine kinase substrate. It is an enzyme, found in the early endosome and its function is to sort mono-ubiquitinated cargo into flat clathrin coat lattices.

—————

Invagination

Invagination refers to the inward folding of an outer part of an organelles's membrane, for example the endsosome.

—————

LDL

LDL is an abbreviation for Low Density Lipoprotein. LDL is a lipoprotein which carries cholesterol.
